Why You Should Absolutely Consider a First Look on Your Wedding Day
There’s something really magical about the moment you see your person on your wedding day. For some couples, that moment happens at the end of the aisle. For others, it happens in a quiet corner before the ceremony. That private moment is what we call a first look, and I’m going to be honest… I am a huge fan.
I know some people worry that it will take away from the aisle moment. In my experience, it does the opposite. When you do a first look, you actually get two emotional moments instead of one. The first is intimate and personal. The second is full of anticipation and energy as you walk down the aisle. The reactions are still there. The nerves are still there. The difference is that you’re not holding them in all morning. A first look in my opinion acts as a nice deep breath before the big moment .
One of the biggest reasons I recommend a first look is the stress factor. Wedding mornings can feel like beautiful chaos. Hair, makeup, timelines, family members asking questions, vendors arriving. It’s a lot. A first look gives you a pause button. You get to step away from everyone else and just breathe together. I have watched shoulders drop, hands stop shaking, and nervous laughter turn into real smiles in that moment.
From a photography standpoint, it also makes your day flow so much smoother. We can take care of a large portion of your portraits before the ceremony. That means after you say “I do,” you’re not disappearing for an hour while your guests head to cocktail hour. You actually get to join them. You get to enjoy the party you worked so hard to plan.
Lighting is another big bonus. Earlier in the day usually gives us more flexibility and better natural light, especially in the fall and winter when the sun sets early. That extra time allows us to create images that feel relaxed instead of rushed.
But beyond all the practical reasons, here’s the real one. It’s yours. Your wedding day is not a performance. It’s not about doing something because it’s what has always been done. It’s about creating moments that feel right for you as a couple. If the idea of seeing each other privately, laughing, crying, fixing each other’s outfits, and having a quiet minute together sounds meaningful, then a first look might be exactly what you need. Some couples even prefer to read their vows during these moments.
And if you’re still unsure, that’s okay too. My job isn’t to pressure you into one choice or another. My job is to help you create a timeline that feels intentional and gives you space to actually experience your day. If you’re planning your wedding and wondering what would work best for you, I’d love to talk through it. Every couple is different, and that’s what makes this so special.
